Cobi Cockburn
Artist Statement

Inspiration founded on influence and informed by experience.

A vibration of atmospheric colours, that hold a different meaning for both you and I.

Suspended in the distance I’m drawn to the presence of light.

Bio.

Cobi Cockburn is a celebrated contemporary artist using light, line, and transparency as her medium. Moving between glass and other traditions, Cobi’s work presents bold, confident, and subtly lyrical statements about the richness of our being.

A unique combination of concise minimalism and abstract expressionism, her work explores subtle transitions of transparency and hue to appeal to the viewer’s subconscious and humanism.  Cobi’s interest in and reference to the landscape is always apparent but often abstracted and used as a metaphor to define the relationship of self-to-space.

Born in Sydney and living in Kiama on the New South Wales south coast, Cobi is a graduate of Sydney College of the Arts, obtaining a Bachelor of Visual Arts and a Master of Fine Arts. She is also a graduate of the Glass Workshop with a Bachelor of Visual Arts (Hons) from the Australian National University, School of Art & Design, Canberra.

Cobi has been awarded the Fuse Glass Prize (Jam Factory, Adelaide); the Tom Malone Prize (Art Gallery of Western Australia) and the Ranamok Glass Prize (Sydney). Cobi was the first glass artist to become a finalist in the Wynne Prize (Art Gallery of New South Wales). Her works have been exhibited nationally and internationally and are held in Australian and international collections, the Sarjeant Gallery Te Whare o Rehua Whanganui, New Zealand; including the Palm Springs Art Museum, USA and Corning Museum of Glass, New York. Currently exhibiting at SEVENMARKS, Cobi is represented by Sabbia Gallery, Sydney. She is also a lecturer and senior technician at Sydney College of the Arts, University of Sydney.
